Lucky Ducks & Tropical Vibes at Family Aquatic Center

June 18, 2026

You’ve heard the saying about ducks taking to water – but what about water slides?

This Saturday, June 20, rubber ducks will race down the slides at the Family Aquatic Center as part of the Lucky Duck Derby, a fundraiser benefiting the Palatine Park Foundation.

The event takes place from 5-6pm at the Family Aquatic Center, 340 E. Palatine Rd. “Quack for a Cause” is the theme of this year’s derby, and organizers are inviting the community to join in the fun while supporting a great cause.

“I can’t wait to see all the ducks at the top of the slide ready to go racing,” said Pam Gauper, Palatine Park Foundation member. “The number of ducks taking the plunge has exceeded our highest hopes, showing how much our community steps up when asked. Also, I will be wearing a new duck bathing suit and everyone will enjoy that!”

Gauper said the idea for the duck derby started when the Foundation realized it needed to raise funds and they wanted an event that was fun and involved the community.

“Surprisingly, Patrick Griffin, Palatine Park District’s Aquatics Manager, actually suggested the derby and I’m not sure he realized what he was in for! After reaching out to other communities that held similar races, we realized we could make this happen!”

Getting involved is easy: adopt a duck for $5, purchase a quack pack (6 ducks for $25) or go all in with a Flock (25 ducks for $100). Then head to the Aquatic Center to cheer on your ducks as they race down the water slide. The top three finishers from each heat will advance to the championship round, where the Lucky Duck Derby champions will be crowned. Winners do not need to be present to win.

Three cash prizes will be awarded: $500 for first place, $250 for second, and $150 for third.

Proceeds from the Lucky Duck Derby will directly benefit the community by helping the Foundation provide recreational scholarships for individuals and families facing financial hardship, assisting with park and facility enhancements, supporting the preservation of open space, and providing more opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities to participate, play, and thrive.

The fun doesn’t end when the last duck crosses the finish line. Stick around for the TropiCool Pool Party from 6-8pm. This all-ages event features live music from local band “My Dad’s Boat” performing on the pool deck. Admission is free with a pool pass or daily admission, and guests can enjoy games, raffles, the water attractions, and slides throughout the Family Aquatic Center.

Attendees can also pick up a limited-edition TropiCool Pool Party sticker while supplies last. It’s the first in the Aquatics Adventures 2026 sticker series, which can be collected by attending TropiCool, Cardboard Boat Regatta, Summerween Pool Party, Christmas in July, and Mermaid Matinee.

With rubber ducks racing for a cause and an evening of tropical-themed entertainment to follow, the Family Aquatic Center is the place to be this Saturday. Whether you’re cheering on your lucky duck, enjoying live music poolside,or making a splash with family and friends, it promises to be an evening filled with fun, community spirit, and summer memories.
